The Business Challenge

Columbia wasn't trying to improve an e-commerce site. It was trying to become a direct-to-consumer company without disrupting the wholesale business that had made it successful.

The Customer Reality

Columbia had built strong relationships with its retail partners and was often reluctant to compete directly for consumers' attention. As a result, the digital experience remained underdeveloped.

Customers already trusted and valued the brands, but finding products, understanding the brand stories, and completing purchases online was often more difficult than it should have been. The opportunity wasn't to create demand—it was to remove friction and make it easier for customers to engage with brands they already loved.

The Strategic Opportunity

The potential was obvious.

The company had exceptional products, positive customer sentiment, recognizable brands, and an executive team willing to invest in growth. What it lacked was a unified digital strategy and a customer experience capable of unlocking that value.

I remember saying:

"With these brands, this should be a $100 million online business."

The ingredients were already there. The challenge was bringing them together in a way that created a seamless customer experience while building stronger brand connections.

When the investment required to achieve that vision was questioned, my response was simple:

"Yes, we need to spend this much."

To their credit, the executive team trusted the vision and committed to the transformation.

The Transformation

I was tasked with leading the redesign and launch of 58 global eCommerce sites across four brands in just 12 months.

To achieve that scale, simplicity and efficiency became guiding principles. We developed a shared technology platform built on a single code base that allowed us to move quickly while maintaining consistency across markets and brands.

At the same time, each brand needed a distinct identity. Fortunately, the foundations already existed. Columbia, Sorel, Mountain Hardwear, and Montrail each had a strong heritage and authentic brand associations. My role was to evolve those stories for a digital-first world and create customer experiences that brought each brand to life online.

The result was a scalable digital ecosystem that balanced operational efficiency with differentiated brand experiences.

Leadership Insight

The technology and design challenges were significant, but they weren't the hardest part.

The greatest challenge was organizational alignment.

The initial brand strategy was developed independently of the UX and digital experience teams, creating disconnects during implementation. Without close coordination, the website redesign and the evolving brand strategy were not always mutually reinforcing.

I was ultimately able to help bridge that gap through initiatives such as the Tech Guide, but the experience reinforced an important lesson:

Successful digital transformation requires more than great design, technology, or branding. It requires alignment across Brand, Marketing, UX, Product, and Executive leadership from the very beginning.

The experience strengthened my conviction that brand strategy and customer experience cannot be developed in isolation. When they are aligned, they amplify one another. When they aren't, even great work can struggle to achieve its full potential.

Impact

  • Led the redesign and launch of 58 global eCommerce sites across Columbia, Sorel, Mountain Hardwear, and Montrail.

  • Established a scalable digital platform with a shared codebase across brands and markets.

  • Helped transform Columbia from a wholesale-first organization into a leading direct-to-consumer business.

  • Contributed to the foundation that helped grow Columbia's digital business from approximately $25M to more than $199M in revenue.

  • Created a framework for aligning brand storytelling, user experience, and eCommerce performance across a multi-brand portfolio.
