The Business Challenge

For more than a century, Godrej Interio has been one of India's most trusted furniture and interior solutions brands, serving consumers, businesses, healthcare organizations, laboratories, and educational institutions.

But the market was changing. Digital-first competitors were entering the category with contemporary brands, streamlined eCommerce experiences, and personalized design services. At the same time, Godrej was navigating long inquiry-to-order cycles, supply-chain complexity, delivery challenges, and quality-control issues.

The greatest challenge, however, was perception. Godrej's products and design capabilities had evolved with the market. Its brand hadn't.

What had once communicated heritage and reliability increasingly felt dated to a younger generation of customers.

The Customer Reality

Trust wasn't the problem.

Generations of Indian consumers and businesses had grown up with Godrej and associated the name with reliability, quality, and consistency. But consumer and business customers had fundamentally different expectations. Retail customers wanted inspiration, personalization, and confidence that Godrej could create a home tailored to their lives. Corporate customers cared more about specifications, pricing, delivery, project management, and after-sales support.

Yet both audiences were being served through essentially the same digital ecosystem, separated by little more than a link in the navigation. The result was an experience optimized for neither. And both audiences increasingly expected the speed, simplicity, and sophistication of a modern digital brand.

The Strategic Opportunity

Godrej didn't need to abandon its heritage. It needed to make that heritage relevant again. The opportunity was to preserve the trust and reliability of customers already associated with the brand while creating distinctly different experiences around the needs of its consumer and business audiences.

Improving usability alone wouldn't be enough. Brand and experience needed to evolve together. Otherwise, every UX improvement would continue fighting against an increasingly outdated perception of the brand.

The Transformation

The first strategic decision was to separate the B2C and B2B experiences, allowing each to be designed around fundamentally different customer needs. For consumers, the experience emphasized inspiration, discovery, personalization, and design expertise. For business customers, it prioritized product information, specifications, pricing, delivery, and after-sales support.

One of the biggest opportunities was already hiding in plain sight. Design consultation was increasingly important to retail customers, and Godrej had a well-established interior design service, but it was practically invisible. The new experience elevated Design Services into primary navigation and integrated it throughout the customer journey, repositioning Godrej from simply a furniture retailer to a partner in creating the home.

The broader experience was simplified around customer needs, with clearer information architecture, more intuitive product discovery, and less friction throughout the shopping journey. At the same time, the brand evolved to better reflect the sophistication already present in Godrej's products and services.

The objective wasn't to make Godrej feel younger. It was to make a century of trust feel relevant to a new generation.

Leadership Insight

Heritage is one of the most valuable assets a brand can possess. It can also become a constraint when organizations confuse preserving their history with preserving how that history is expressed.

This project reinforced an important principle: The strongest heritage brands don't choose between trust and relevance. They use one to build the other.

Godrej didn't need to become a different company. It needed to preserve what generations of customers already believed about it while evolving how a new generation experienced that promise.
