The Business Challenge
For more than a century, United Farmers of Alberta (UFA) has earned the trust of Western Canadian farmers by providing the products, services, and support they depend on every day.
Its reputation wasn't in question. Its digital experience was.
As customer expectations evolved, UFA faced the challenge of modernizing how members interacted with the cooperative while preserving the values that had made it one of Alberta's most trusted agricultural organizations.
The objective wasn't simply to improve eCommerce. It was to ensure the member experience reflected the strength of the UFA brand.
“We know the member experience needs to improve. At some point the hassle will outweigh the benefits.”
The Customer Reality
Members consistently described UFA as a trusted partner.
They valued the cooperative model, appreciated the quality of its products, and believed the organization genuinely understood the needs of Western Canadian agriculture.
What frustrated them wasn't the company. It was the experience.
The website made routine tasks harder than they needed to be. Reordering previous purchases was cumbersome, membership information was difficult for prospective members to find, and the overall experience felt dated compared to the confidence members already had in the organization. The digital experience no longer reflected the relationship members had with the brand.
“I’m a farmer, not a technical guy, but I can tell you they don’t make it easy to buy stuff.”
The Strategic Opportunity
Trust already existed.
The opportunity was to reinforce it.
The strategy focused on three interconnected objectives:
Create a faster, more intuitive member experience.
Make becoming a member simple and compelling.
Modernize the brand without losing its agricultural heritage.
Rather than treating UX and branding as separate initiatives, the project approached them as a single system.
Every interaction either strengthened or weakened the trust members already placed in the cooperative.
The goal was to ensure every touchpoint reinforced the same promise.

The Transformation
The experience was redesigned around how members actually worked rather than how the organization was structured.
Information architecture shifted from a marketing-driven hierarchy to one centered on member priorities, making products, services, and resources easier to discover.
Educational content expanded the site's role beyond eCommerce, positioning UFA as a trusted source of agricultural knowledge for both experienced producers and newcomers entering the industry.
The purchasing experience was streamlined through clearer Product Detail Pages, improved product validation, AI-powered search, and features such as Reorder, allowing members to quickly purchase supplies they relied on regularly.
At the same time, the visual identity evolved to better reflect the confidence, optimism, and professionalism that members already associated with UFA.
The redesign wasn't about changing who UFA was.
It was about ensuring the experience finally expressed what members had believed all along.
Leadership Insight
One of the easiest mistakes organizations make is assuming that trust, once earned, will sustain itself.
It won't.
Every interaction either reinforces that trust or slowly erodes it.
This project reinforced an important principle:
Brand evolution isn't always about becoming something new. Sometimes it's about becoming a better expression of who you've always been.
The most meaningful transformations aren't necessarily the most dramatic.
They're the ones who make customers feel the organization finally reflects the relationship they've always believed they had.
